  • Roughly dig over vacant ground adding manure.
  • Plant a green manure crop to overwinter.
  • Turn the compost heap.
  • Erect a separate bay to process fallen leaves.
  • Remove yellowing leaves from winter brassicas.
  • Tidy up the strawberry bed.
  • Prune fruit bushes and replace past it with new.

  • Thoroughly clean and disinfect the greenhouse.
  • Ventilate to discourage mould.
  • Sow a hardy lettuce like Arctic King.
  • Bring in all tender plants.
  • Dry out pumpkins and squashes
    before storing in a cool, dark place.
  • Wait for a frost to hit dahlias and cannas before lifting.

  • Clear summer bedding and replace with spring bedding.
  • Cut back herbaceous perennials, add to compost heap.
  • Rejuvenate the boarder, lift and divide,
    improve the soil and mulch.
  • Continue to plant spring-flowering bulbs.
  • Plant container grown shrubs, trees and perennials.
  • Prune tall shrubs to avoid wind damage.
  • Remove any diseased, spindly, old and
    unproductive stems from roses.

  • Collect seed heads for Christmas floral arrangements.
  • Re-plant hanging baskets with spring bulbs,
    winter heathers, trailing ivies or spring bedding plants.
  • Check bulbs being forced in darkness.

  • Best time for laying new turf.
  • Repair bumps, hollows, bald patches and edges to lawns.
  • Last chance for sowing lawn seed.
  • Cover the pond with netting to catch falling leaves.
  • Reduce the quantity of food for the fish.
  • Remove any decaying plant growth.
