box

  • Clip box, privet and lonicera.
  • Prune weigela, philadelphus deutzia and
    clematis montana when finished flowering.
  • Take softwood cuttings. RHS guide pdf.
  • Cut back hellebores, early daffodils and apply fertiliser,
    which is available now at the Trading Centre.
  • Lift and divide primroses. alyssum and aubretia.
  • Lift over crowded spring bulbs, store and replant in autumn.

  • Thin out carrots, parsnips, beetroot etc.
  • Plant out broccoli, calabrese, brussels sprouts,
    summer cabbage, beans, leeks, celery and tomatoes.
  • Harvest lettuce, radish and other salads.
  • Harvest early potatoes once flowers open.
  • Prevent slug damage.
  • Check for caterpillars on brassicas.
  • Net soft fruit to prevent bird attack.

  • Support tall floppy plants.
  • Tie in climbing and rambling roses, honeysuckle and sweet peas.
  • Deadhead regularly.
  • Keep on top of the weeds.
  • Sow biennuials: bellis, cheiranthus, campanula, dianthus,
    digitalis, myosotis, primula and viola.

  • In the greenhouse:
  • Shade to keep cool and prevent scorch.
  • Pinch out tomato side shoots.
  • Spray tomato flowers with water to help fruit set.
  • Water first thing or in the evening.
  • Keep an eye out for pests and disease.
  • Position summer hanging baskets and containers outside.
  • Each week apply liquid feed.
  • Finish planting out summer bedding, canna,
    sweet peas, dahlias and chrysanthemums.

mow

  • Mow the lawn regularly.
  • Mix grass cuttings into the compost heap.
  • Apply fertiliser if not given in May.
