January

seeds

  • Purchase early sowing seeds from our Trading Centre.
  • Use cloches or covering to warm the soil for early vegetable sowings.
  • Raise lettuce, salad crops and strawberry plants for early picking, in a poly tunnel or greenhouse.
  • Continue harvesting parsnips, kale, leeks, winter cabbage, chard, spinach and Brussels sprouts

galanthus

  • Dig up congested snowdrops and winter aconites, replenish soil and redistribute plants.
  • Trim lawn edges and reseed bare or worn patches

treatment

  • Apply preservative to timber fences, sheds and pergolas.
  • Spray patios to treat slippery surfaces.
  • Using purpose cleaner remove moss, mould, algae and dirt from decking.
  • When dry apply protective application to decking.
  • Repair, upgrade or create new hard landscaping.

planting

  • Replace tired old roses with some of the new excellent disease resistant varieties.
  • Plant bare root roses, trees, shrubs, canes and bushes.
  • Prune shrub roses.
  • Opportunity to move existing shrubs to better locations.
  • Water new or moved plantings in dry spells.

early rhubarb

  • Start forcing rhubarb and seakale.
  • Check planted containers of spring bulbs.
  • Finish taking hardwood cuttings.
  • Trim wall climbers into shape.

pruning

  • Prune buddleias and late summer flowering clematis.
  • Prune wisteria, hardy fuchsia and cornus.
  • Prune apple and pear cordons, fans and espaliers.
  • Prune blackberry, gooseberry and loganberry.
  • Prune summer fruiting raspberry.
  • Prune black, red and white currents.
  • Prune fig.
