Growing Old Fashioned Flowers

Gilbert White Gardens
Our first speaker of 2018 David Standing
give the illustrated presentation
"Growing Old Fashioned Flowers"

Before retirement David managed the Gilbert White garden
at Selborne from 1979 where he researched
the layout and plants of the historic garden.

As no plan existed, White’s journals, correspondence,
household account books and diary called ‘The Garden Kalendar’
were studied in order to work out the garden White created.

David's talk highlighted the flower gardens
familiar to Gilbert White from 1751 to 1771.

the recording of the BBC Solent radio programme

A packed house came with a bevy of diverse questions.
The first recording was followed by a refreshment interval,
then on to the second recording,
with questions themed on seaside gardens.

The presentation was lively, entertaining and full of
good horticultural advice and guidance.

The programme is scheduled to be broadcast on Easter Sunday.
